What is NIPUN Bharat Mission?
The full name of NIPUN Bharat is National Initiative for Proficiency in Reading with Understanding Numeracy. To put it in Hindi, it is a national initiative that has been started to increase efficiency in studies, especially in reading, writing and mathematics. This mission was launched on 5 July 2021 under the Samagra Shiksha Yojana of the Ministry of Education. This scheme is being implemented jointly between the central and state governments, schools, teacher training institutes and local bodies.
The main objective of this mission is to ensure that all the children of India acquire the age-appropriate level of reading, writing and math skills in studies from class 1 to 3. This mission also works according to the New Education Policy 2020 (NEP 2020) of the Government of India, in which early education has been given the highest priority.
Why was the NIPUN Bharat Mission Needed?
Every year in India, many reports like ASER (Annual Status of Education Report) show that many times even the children of class 5 do not know how to read at the level of class 2 or solve easy math questions. This lack of education later becomes a hindrance in the entire educational journey of the child. This reduces the confidence of the child and many children even leave school.
NIPUN Bharat Mission has come to address this problem. This mission works at five levels so that the scheme is implemented properly everywhere:
- National level: The Ministry of Education formulates policy, issues guidelines and monitors.
- State level: States and Union Territories plan and implement it according to their needs.
- District level: District institutes like DIET manage teacher training and resources.
- Block level: Support and guidance is provided to a group of schools.
- School level: Principals and teachers implement learning strategies, monitor progress and communicate with parents.
This kind of mechanism makes it easier to implement the mission at the local level with national guidelines.
